New York | Gendered Violence in the Fields: Workers’ Voice Tour with Coalition of Immokalee Workers

Join AF3IRM NY/NJ as they host “Gendered Violence in the Fields: Workers’ Voice Tour with Coalition of Immokalee Workers” on Tuesday, March 1st, from 7pm to 9pm at 339 Lafayette St.

Julia de la Cruz of Coalition of Immokalee Workers will discuss sexual harassment and assault that farmworkers have historically faced in the fields, the gender dynamics of a working in overwhelmingly male dominated industry, and how the coalition organizes particularly with farmworker women to face these challenges.

Coalition of Immokalee Workers, is a farmworker-led organization in Immokalee, Florida that has organized for over 20 years to better the conditions for farmworkers in the US agricultural industry. I, along with Julia de la Cruz, a farmworker and organizer with the CIW, will be in New York City as part of the 2016 Worker’s Voice Tour.

On March 3rd at 4pm, farmworkers from Immokalee along with hundred of allies will march to the offices of Nelson Peltz, Chairman of the Board of the Wendy’s Corporation to call on him to use his influence to bring Wendy’s into dialogue with farmworkers and to sign the Fair Food Program! This march will begin at West 59th Street and 5th Avenue—the Southeast corner of Central Park—and finish at Nelson Peltz’s office on Park Avenue.
